How do Security Experts surf the tidal wave of security news?

Surfing Cybersecurity

Have you ever wondered what security professionals review each day? How do they keep up with the security news? What sources do they use? If you are new to security, what sources shall you track? We are overwhelmed with a deluge of cybersecurity news. In essence, we’re surfing cybersecurity news trying to keep up and not get caught unawares.

It is a good “where to start” for people coming into the cybersecurity space. Follow along with someone who has been doing security. Put another way, you get to discover what Barry Greene is reading.

What is Flipboard?

Flipboard is free to use and a break from the social media deluge. I’ve used it for years, having a private magazine to keep all the news articles I get from email news feeds, RSS feeds, shared links in security forums, and many other sources. I would lose track and think a day later, “Where was that article with the link to that paper.” Opening this Flipboard magazine made sense, as it would help new security professionals ride along and learn how to curate their “daily list of news.”

How much time Should I Invest?

You can easily spend 24 hours a day reading security news. Don’t spend that much time. Spend 30 to 60 minutes daily reading security news, exploring the new papers, being alerted to recent attacks, and being mindful of emerging vulnerabilities. Don’t forget political news. Nation-State politics has a mirror on the Internet. The key is to make this a daily habit. As a daily habit, you will find a personal rhythm, interest, and scope.

Branch Out & Explore

Use the daily habit of security reading as a tool to branch out and explore. For example, people new to security would see vulnerability disclosure with a CVE and CVSS score and ask, “What are those scores, and how are they used.” Grasp that question and explore and learn. Someone seasoned in the security space would see an article about container vulnerability and wonder, “How do you build a security architecture around containers.” The daily habit of “reading security news” is your gateway to expanding your security diversity, breadth, depth, and edge. It is one of the ways to sharpen the saw.
