Secretary General of ITU to be elected on the 10th Nov’06

After having come in 3rd then 4th in the first two round of votes for the position of Secretary General, Mr Marc Furrer has pulled out of the race. Swiss Info

Mr Hamadoun Toure from Mali, who has been the elected Director of the Bureau for Telecommunication Development for 8 years, received 72 votes after the second round and has the backing of African nations, whilst Germany’s Matthias Kurth with 51 votes is supported by European member states. The Swiss candidate was apparently asked to run by some African countries and European countries, but it could be political that since Geneva already hosts the UN and ITU, that it may have been a purely political issue. Interesting to see what happens tomorrow.
